Abstracts

The photos below were exhibited in the City of Overland Park "Abstract" Exhibit last fall. These were taken on a trip to Oregon last summer during which our focus was photography for four days. We had cameras in hand and travelled up and down the coast of Oregon photographing a diverse cross-section of subjects (some other photos in earlier posts).

The netting and rust photos were both taken in a working shipyard that had acres of buoys, nets and other maritime equipment. It was a nice overcast day, so we were able to get amazing saturated colors with no worries about blowing out highlights or blocking shadows. The other photo was taken after dusk in the harbor at Newport Oregon.

I generally don't use a tripod but these photos wouldn't have been possible without one. I was always frustrated positioning the the head of my tripod to get just the angle and photo I wanted until an instructor told me about the Really Right Stuff tripod heads and camera L-brackets. They make positioning and repositioning the camera on the tripod a piece of cake, both for horizontal and vertical shots. No more frustration! I find my range of photography expanding as a result of using the RRS head.
